Every few decades or so, there are major astrological activations that shift our collective consciousness and the events that play out on the world stage. These activations take place when two of the outer planets---Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto---meet up by conjunction, square, or opposition. Because the outer planets move more slowly than the inner planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars), they symbolize major life events and generational trends.
Today, February 20th, we have a rare conjunction between Saturn and Neptune, which are meeting together at 0° Aries. Before we get into it, let's first talk about what a conjunction is and how they have shown up historically.
Conjunctions In Astrology
Conjunctions are when two planets meet at the exact same zodiacal degree at the exact same time. These are rare cosmic alignments which act like a key sliding into a lock and opening a door. Conjunctions initiate events and eras. With outer planet conjunctions, sometimes we'll see significant events occurring right away, but in most cases the events triggered by these cosmic meetups unfold over the months and years to come, and ultimately define an era.
Below are some examples of the most recent outer planet conjunctions involving Saturn. Saturn represents structures, rules, and authority figures and systems. Saturn also represents growth and mastery achieved through discipline and hard work over time.
The Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction (every 20 years). The last one was December 21st, 2020, when Jupiter and Saturn met at 0° Aquarius. Aquarius symbolizes innovation, technology, space travel, and society and communities. Since this time, we continued to see social distancing as a result of COVID, we've seen greater societal and political division, the acceleration and integration of AI, and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin 11-minute space flight. We can see how Jupiter here helped to amplify the growth and mastery of Saturn, through the acceleration of technology and space innovation. Jupiter also expanded the division that was already taking place politically in the aftermath of the COVID shutdown.
The Saturn-Pluto Conjunction (every 33-38 years): The last was on January 12th, 2020, when Saturn and Pluto met up at 22° Capricorn. Saturn and Capricorn represent authority, power structures, capitalism, businesses and employment. Pluto represents death, disease, power struggles, and rebirth and transformation. Shortly after this activation, we experienced a pandemic which took many lives and shut down our ways of living and working. We are still navigating the long-term impact of this conjunction, not just because of disease, but due to what COVID unveiled about the weaknesses in our governments, education systems, business structures, and health organizations. Pluto here helped to expose corruption, greed, and power imbalances in our systems of authority, which is already sparking a revolution.
The Saturn-Neptune Conjunction (every 36 years): The last one was in 1989. Saturn and Neptune met up by conjunction in Capricorn three times this year; first in March, then again in June, and for a third time in November. Again, Saturn represents power and authority structures. Neptune tends to dissolve whatever it touches. The major event of 1989? The fall of the Berlin Wall (Neptune dissolving barriers). The Soviet Union also collapsed shortly thereafter in 1991.

Now that we have an idea of what these rare conjunctions do, let's explore what we might expect from the Saturn-Neptune Conjunction in Aries on February 20th. Let's break down the symbolism:
Saturn: power structures and authority (e.g. governments, banks, businesses, large organizations, etc.). Also growth through discipline and mastery. Saturn is practical, concerned with building solid foundations and investing in the long-term future.
Neptune: highly spiritual, artistic, and idealistic. Neptune craves divine inspiration, and tends to break down harsh structures and dissolves what is not in alignment with higher spiritual ideals. Neptune can also be idealistic to the point of being unrealistic and delusional. Neptune can struggle with escapism and being ungrounded.
Aries: In Greek Mythology, Ares is the God of War. Aries represents battle, conflict, competition, survival, individual rights and freedoms, activism, soldiers and warriors. Aries' greatest strength is the will to overcome suffering and adversity.
0°: Every zodiac sign has degrees between 0° and 29°, and each degree has significance. At 0°, we are initiating a brand new story, launching new ideas, setting things into motion. 0° is highly significant.
Now that we have the breakdown, we're going to put on our astrologer glasses. In essence, what an astrologer does is look at the symbolism of the different aspects involved (i.e. zodiac signs, planets, houses, etc.) and weave together a story based on the meanings of these symbols. For greater accuracy, astrologers use history as evidence for how these aspects tend to behave, and then they look to the present moment for clues as to what is unfolding or about to unfold.
So, the world trends (non-country specific) we might see immediately following the February 20th Saturn-Neptune Conjunction at 0° Aries, and in the years/decade to come, are as follows:
Initiation of new wars based on justice, equality, and fighting for what's right
The dissolution of war initiatives and narratives that are based on power grabs, and the exposure of corruption and harsh authorities in militaries and governments
The launch of new revolutions which challenge power and authority
Advancements in law and politics which protect individual rights
New sports and/or athletic competitions may be created, and we may see incredible feats and records broken, shaping what we believe in humanly possible
New art forms may take shape, especially ones that relate to strength, individuality, and overcoming struggle. We may see greater intersections between art and physical movement
Exposure of the delusional side of rugged individualism. We may be invited to take a sober look at the harms of individualism when it trends towards selfishness and narcissism
Questioning and dissolving of faith. Losing faith in what is delusional or not sustainable.
Rebuilding of faith. Discovering what spiritual practices, ideologies, and philosophies give us strength during hard times, and make us better humans
Cultural and national identities may also dissolve (potentially through war or revolution), and be reshaped into something new, to reflect who we want to be and what we want to build for our future
These are just some ideas. For those of us who live in the United States, we can look for clues as to what might unfold by observing what is happening right now in our country, and what conditions have been building in the recent past. We are more divided as a nation than we have been in a long time. Revolution is already brewing. People are becoming more enraged at the authority figures in government, big business, big tech, and healthcare.
There Is Hope
"So what do we do with this information?" You might ask. There are always options available to us in how we choose to respond to our external world. We can feel helpless and powerless, we can play the victim and we can lash out at who/what we feel is to blame for our problems, or we can recognize that we are always co-creating our reality and we have the power to shape our world for the better. Now, I could sit here and claim that, as an astrologer, I have access to great cosmic wisdom and therefore always make the better of those two choices, but that would be ridiculous. The Universe is mysterious and being human is hard. The truth is that I often oscillate between feeling helpless and feeling empowered. It's easy to feel discouraged by mounting injustices created by powers that are well beyond our control or understanding. Yet I also know that dwelling in this disempowered place and blaming "the system" is a miserable way to live. I firmly believe that the outer planets and their cosmic movements are invitations for each of us to grow and evolve spiritually, and our societies will reflect the collection of our individual choices.
God always reminds me that "It's not what you look at, it's what you see." The story that we tell about the world around us becomes the narrative that drives our choices and behaviors. The good news is we can change that narrative at any time. We can choose a narrative that leaves us feeling empowered to make meaningful choices in our lives, our communities, and our country.
The Saturn-Neptune Conjunction in Aries is generating the kind of powerful alchemy that will require us to take action. It won't be enough to sit on the sidelines anymore. We are navigating a decade that is profoundly shaping our politics, our reality, and what defines us as a human race. We can tell ourselves that we are victims of harsh times, or we can remind ourselves that we get to be alive during this historical moment. We can all take a turn shaping the clay on the great potter's wheel known as Earth---the planet that matters most.
